XP SP2 installed and MORE pop-up ads!

Oct 21, 2004 2:26AM PDT

I have XP Pro with SP2 installed and the pop-up blocker is set to max. I am using IE 6. Can anyone tell why I am still being blasted with pop-up ads all of a sudden? I have a registry cleaner, a spy bot killer, an up-to-date anti-virus program, and I
normally clean out the cookies folder.

Why, oh why, are these @&!#@ing pop-ups plagueing me still? What can be done with what I have instead of using third party software?

Thanks so much.

I've been using the Google Toolbar with its popup blocker. When I installed SP2 I disabled its blocker and still use Google.

Since switching to Mozilla Firefox, I've had no pop-ups and no spyware get in. It's almost like its own firewall. I recommend it highly.

The article [Q843015] explains that after you install SP2, pop-up windows may still appear, even though the default Pop-up Blocker feature is turned on, may occur for the following reasons, and discusses a method for resolving the issues:

? You click a link that opens a pop-up window.

? The Web site where the pop-up window originates is either in the Trusted sites Web content zone or the Local intranet Web content zone. Because Web sites in these zones are considered safe, their pop-up windows are never blocked.

? The pop-up window is opened by software that is running on the computer.

? The pop-up window is opened by ActiveX controls that are enabled from a Web site.

Try using slimbrowser...www.flashpeak.com. It's a frontend to IE with a builtin popup blocker. The other recommendation is to quit using IE and go to Netscape or Firefox.
