XP sp2 Compatibility Question.

Jul 20, 2007 1:29AM PDT

Hello, just recently I decided to put together a computer, I had a question about Windows XP sp2.

I'm going to add this harddrive: Hitachi / 250GB / 7200 / 8MB / SATA-300 / OEM / SATA-II Hard Drive. Now I was wondering if SATA HD's are compatible with Windows XP sp2. I've read something about "Not getting the full 3MBs until you download Hitachi Drivers, the default is at 150 MBs." I understand that, but I wanted to know if XP sp2 would even work on it.. It's probably an easy answer 'yeah..' but I didn't want to order it until I knew for sure. Thanks a bunch.

You're right.

XP SP2 knows nothing about SATA drives, motherboard chipsets and such. During the install you get to press the F6 key to feed a floppy disk if the legacy support in the BIOS isn't good enough.

But after you learn all about drivers and install them, then XP SP2 will work fine.

Since you are adding it rather than ...

attempting to install to it chances are that if the SATA controllers are on the motherboard and the BIOS "sees" the drive then XP SP2 will also "see" the drive in Disk Management (Start, Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, Administrative Tools, Computer Management , Storage, Disk Management (Local)) where you can then partition as desired then format the partition(s).

If the drive is not "seen" there you will need to install the necessary motherboard drivers for the SATA controllers.

Hey, sorry for the misunderstanding, I meant that this is the very first Hard Drive that I'm going to get for this computer. I'm installing XP sp2 onto it. Here is the Motherboard that is coming with the computer.

This is the first computer that I've ever built (partially built, just needed to add a HD and OS), but I don't want any crazy problems with it on XP. Here is the computer itself, I'm not sure if it's media reader even supports floppy disks. (I hope it does, since I could instal the drivers that way.) Also, I'm not sure if the computer will ship with the Motherboards CD.. (Does anyone know?) Thanks.
