XP slow to boot since Feb '08

On 13 February 2008 I received two new security updates from Microsoft for my Windows XP Home edition. Since then my 2.4 Ghz machine takes between 5 to 10 minutes to boot. As much as 15 before I dare to get on the internet.
System will not let me restore settings now.
And my IE 7.0 is slow and checks for certificates since 8 Mar 2008.

2 things you can do

In reply to: XP slow to boot since Feb '08

1. look in your add-remove programs and check the box that says "show updates". See which updates match the day you updated your computer and try to uninstall them.

2. you can look in your startup menu and see which programs are in there. it might not be caused by this update. Run>msconfig, hit enter. Go to the Startup tab and see which programs are there. Are there any that you don't recognize, or want to start up?

Some cleaning programs such as ccleaner can remove the "hotfix uninstallers" which are needed if you want to uninstall an update. Hopefully you haven't done this.

Have you done an antivirus/antispyware scan? This would be best done in safe mode (which would minimize the chances of getting a slow startup). Hit F8 (or one of the F keys if that won't work) and if your programs are updated, just select Safe Mode (if you need to update, go to S.M. with networking).
