XP shuts down, but still have to turn off

Nov 30, 2003 3:30PM PST

Hi guys,

have just done a clean reinstall of XP PRO on a reformatted partition. XP shuts down ok, but computer does not turn off, I get the message "it is now safe to turn off your computer".

Can't remember where I went before to get automatic shutdown.

Thanks

"Tip: If you are asking for help to troubleshoot a computer-related problem, please be sure to include all the necessary information (ie: operating system, model number, hardware, software, etc) that will help others identify your problem for a speedy resolution."

Given you just installed XP, the lesson here is that Microsoft will not update your BIOS or ask you go fetch your motherboard drivers nor does XP ask you try ACPI or APM settings in the BIOS. Your hardware may not support turning off the power.

Hello Bob,

Pentium 111 processor with SSE
BIOS AGP version 3.11.00.02
Gigabyte motherboard 6vx7b-4x
XP PRO

Updated motherboard drivers some months ago. Was running XP PRO on another partition but had lost sound and could not get sfc /scannow to restore damaged files. Eventually decided to start a complete new clean install on another partition.

When I installed the first time on my other drive, I had this same problem. Select for shutdown, shutsdown to "it is now safe to turn off your computer". I got a fix from ZD net, may have been reply from David. Should have saved it!!!

I think it may have been a registry alteration??

Thanks, Lesley

The answer to a long sought after irregular shut down procedure was found in your post. The Advanced Power Management (APM) is now checked and the shutdown is perfect and completely normal.

Thanks!
