XP shut down?

Anybody heard of XP registration running out? My friend had ERROR sign saying "xp registration has run out" and his PC shut down? He's had XP for 2 years, was this a virus?

But Microsoft has been great about firing up such a license. Only those that had shady copies find themselves in a bind.

Causes are all over the map. The cure remains the same.
