XP Service Pack 3 problems

by jollygreen810 / September 20, 2008 6:06 AM PDT

Toshiba Satellite 2415 notebook, Windows XP Home Edition

I downloaded Windows XP Service Pack 3 from Windows Update on Saturday, September 20. It partially installed, then encountered a problem and would not complete installation. Now the DSL modem is disabled (I'm using my wife's desktop on the same DSL, so I know the DSL is working). I tried reinstalling the modem using the Qwest installation disk, but CD-ROM will not recognize the format. I tried System Restore to the day before; SR works up until the final "next" button, at which point nothing happens. Any ideas?

Is this the old 2.0-GHz Pentium 4-M model?

If so I run into issues with that machine every month. The issue I see here is not so much SP3 but the machine is known to be cranky. You can try a new CD/DVD drive to fix that common failure.

Yep, it is that. I just want to restore my system to before I downloaded SP3. Why doesn't system restore function as advertised?

Sorry, I didn't author or have anything to do with that. We do know it's unreliable so this is why you see people write and ask "How and what do I backup?"

Maybe, someday they'll get it right.
