the discussion here;
We went through everything we could think of, and the problem was finally narrowed down, (post #10), to "hard disk seek times", ie, the hard disk was failing.
Now, that may not be the case with your system, but I would start implementing your backup plan, and test for that.
....and I mean SLOW. Like it takes 30 seconds for a menu to pop up, 5 minutes to populate the "Add/Remove Programs" list, an hour and a quarter to uninstall iTunes. This has been going on for over a week. I've done a low-level virus scan that reports no problems, I've defragmented twice, cleaned my registry, removed as much as possible from my Startup folder, cleared all my browser caches, increased the size of my page swap file, checked for malware, removed temporary system files, emptied my Recycle bin, disabled graphic effects like screensavers and menu fades, reduced the number of colors my display is using, turned off search indexing..................and still! GRRRRR.....It's an old VAIO laptop with XP Media Center 2005 SP3 (dual core, 1.86GHz), 1Gb of RAM, 26Gb free on the hard disk, using Google Chrome. Besides getting a new laptop (working on it) -- anyone got anything else to suggest????
