XP running realy slow

Mar 2, 2004 1:17AM PST

My old hard drive crashed so I purchased a new one. I instaled windows XP last night. It took well over 5 hours. I am running a Althon XP2200 processer with 1 gig ram. now windows is running extreamly slow. I try to install some software and it just bombs out. I tested the hard drive and its fine. Anyone run into this or have any sugjestions. Is it a hardware(which component) probelm?
Thanks for the help

Re:XP running realy slow + New install + Connect to the internet = Very likely a worm.

A new install of XP even with an added Antivirus won't stop the MS Blaster and it varients from installing themselves on your machine. http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/blast.asp notes this and more.

Then driveby downloader can cause you to look at Parasite removal programs.

http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6132-0.html?forumID=32&threadID=1313&start=0 notes the five scanning tools and removal tools that are fairly safe. If one does encounter an issue, its always been damage done by the MALWARE. The most common issue being Layered Service Provider replacement which you can use LSPFIX (Hint: use http://www.google.com to find).

The thread has follow on discussions about new links if you don't want to use Google to find an item.

And finally, a NEW XP install needs finishing by the OS installer with motherboard drivers.

Bob

PS. All the tools are free.

When you install any drivers or program software, do you disable your anti virus software if applicable?

If the XP install took 5 hours, take the drive back for a replacement. You did not say if it was an SATA drive. Was it?
