Xp Reboots

Mar 21, 2004 4:23AM PST

Hi there,

I've just freshly formatted my 2nd pc, I told my son to download some driver updates from microsoft, so he did and installed them... But now when we load up the computer, after it loads xp(the part with the xp logo) when it's trying to load the userscreen it reboots on me, can any body help me or tell me how to fix this as i can't get into my 2nd pc.

It's Xp Home Addition.
And the File System is NTFS.

So if anybody could please help me it would be very greatly appreciated.

-Thanks In Advance.

Is your system XP compatible? Has XP ever run on this machine before? Have you been able to get to the desktop and has any software been added that might cause this reboot?

I told my son to download some driver updates from microsoft, so he did and installed them.

System Restore (Q304449) - used when device drivers have recently been updated and Device Driver Roll Back did not restore stability. It restores all system and application settings back to those that were in effect at a point in time being specified by the user. Affects no other files or settings.

HI,
I have had major problems with Windows XP modem driver updates. Have you tried a safe mode boot ?
If you can boot in safe mode, try and uninstall the updates one by one and see if this fixes the problem.

1. The article [Q823836] warns that when you try to remove a product update and a more-recent product update has been installed, you must remove them in the reverse order -- the most-recently, the next-most-recently, and so on.

2. If you are already experiencing an issue because a product update was removed in the incorrect order, you can use the "Qfecheck.exe" tool to identify which product updates may be broken, then reinstall that product update to make sure that the correct file versions are installed.

3. The article [Q319109] explains that when you visit the Windows Update site, you may find that the list of updates includes items already installed and may occur if the updates already installed have not been registered correctly. If this generally applies, see the article, [Q822798].

4. The Command-Line option for XPsp1.exe and Update.exe to list hotfixes that are currently installed, use:

XPsp1.exe /L

Note: Please be advised, the article [Q328001] states that after you install Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1), you cannot use the Start Windows Using Last Known Good Configuration feature to undo the installation and to use the Add or Remove Programs tool in Control Panel.

I hope i am wrong but there is a virus that does this exact thing. I believe it is blaster32. If you did not have an antivirus on the machine when the drivers where downloaded you may be infected or if this is a reformatted drive it may of been hidden on the old boot sector. Try going to Norton web sight they have a good write up on how to cure this if it is a Virus. Hope this helps.
