XP Pro SP2 Problems

by TerryT / September 15, 2004 10:41 AM PDT

After installing SP2, everything seemed smooth until trying to do my weekly backup with Stomp BackUp My PC. BU repeadedly almost finishes, but stalls on xpsp1res.dll. Search reveals about 35 copies of the file, some with different sizes. After copying a recent version to floppy, I tried deleating all copies from the hard disk. Something immediately recreated them.

I have tried diagnosing in Safe Mode, but I get a message that Windows did not start successfully. But it will start in Normal Mode, just not Safe Mode.

Seems weird, but here are my questions:

Are there known problems with SP2 and BackUp My PC?

What is xpsp1res.dll? What does it do? What creates it? And why so many copies and versions?

Why would Windows boot normally, but not in Safe Mode?

Any help will be much appreciated.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
