I have p4 2.4 512mem,It came with xp installed, and of course crashed beyond belief. I ran win 98 for a year flawlessly but formatted and installed xp again. Nice graghics, but it cant touch 98 on internet speed. WHY? 98 always downloaded between 1.5 to 1.6Mbs, xp 1.2 down to 0.3Mbs

Security

Hi,

Its probaly XP's enhanced security acting up. XP has a bunch of security defenses that will sometimes slow down the internet connection. It could also be an issue with your Internet Service Provider. Talk to your ISP about any procedures you may have to go through with XP to boost your connection.

It's not the operating system

There's nothing about the differences between Win98 and XP that would cause this. You either have some setting wrong, or the XP machine may be picking up malware at an accelerated rate compared to the Win98 system.

It doesn't have anything to do with added security measures in XP, because there really aren't any besides NTFS permissions which wouldn't have any affect on network performance.

If the system crashes often with XP, I would tend to suspect buggy drivers as the most probable cause of the problem. Of course, one can never rule out malware these days if you're running Windows. If you're using either Norton or McAfee virus scanners, those too can contribute significantly to performance issues. There's something else that's different between your Win98 and XP setups that is the root of the problem. Isolating that difference, and then changing it is the next couple of steps in the process.
