XP Pro, IE 6 and Zone Alarm

Nov 25, 2003 4:53AM PST

Hi guys,

Can you help with formatting Zone Alarm please? Or suggest a more easily managed firewall??

Have had trial version of Zone Alarm Pro for two frustrating days. Have to turn off Zone Alarm to open Internet Explorer. Then to open new browser windows, and to follow links in already opened windows, have to turn off Zone Alarm or else it shuts all windows down. Sort of counter productive really to be accessing sites with Zone Alarm turned off. I don't get the choice to agree to open new windows. All windows are closed instantly a new window is being opened.

I know that family members will probably get sick of this and just turn it right off. Sort of thinking myself it might be simpler to just get hacked and have to reinstall XP!!!!

Thanks

Have you considered using XP's TCP/IP security?

You can limit in and out ports to KNOWN things like e-mail and web ports.

Even an unpatched XP without SP1 was not infected when I had used that.

And there are other firewalls.

Thanks Bob,

had been using the XP firewall, but had sort of gathered from here that I needed extra protection. One of the family members uses MSN Messenger daily and I was a little worried about what could come from there.

How would I configure the TCP/IP security to to allow email and web ports please? I update my virus software daily, would allowing email and web port access plus my virus software probably give needed protection?

Do you feel that I would be best buying a firewall product?

Thanks for your time and advice.

Leslie,

I am using the identical combination of software as you and having no problem. First I would suggest using the FREE ZoneAlarm 45.530.0. Secondly if you have used other versions of ZoneAlarm it is my recommendation to uninstall your present version first. Then completely remove anything left in the ZoneAlarm folder and clean the registry of all ZoneAlarm left over stuff. If you are not experienced be careful with the registry and make a registry backup before starting.

I have seen comments from others who are having a problems with the ZA Pro version and have noted from past experience that left overs in the registry creates problems.

In my way of thinking ZoneAlarm is one of the best firewall available. If you are troubled by pop-ups select the setting for ZA to do its thing and not bother you. I find it very trouble free and has blocked thousands of attempted intrusions.

I agree with Glenn. I have been using ZA since 2000, and until May was using the free version. I believe they offer support even for the freebie. I can't help but feeling that there are just a few settings to change to get everything up and running. Good luck.

I love the way it stops pop ups, my only current problem is accessing internet.
