XP PRO COMMANDS VERY SLOW

I have WIN XP PRO on my computer. Last week it started taking forever to open up. When it opens and I click on any icon or I perform any command, it takes a very, very long time for the command to take place. I started the computer in SAFE MODE and everything works fine, but once I re-boot in NORMAL MODE, the problem starts again. It doesn't matter what I click, it takes forever for the command to take place. I just bought NORTON UTILITIES and it took me one hour just to install it. I haven't scan the computer yet but at this pace it's probably going to take an entire day for a full scan. I RESTORED it to a previous date with no luck. Any comments, advise and suggestions are really appreciated.

Hint: What is running ?

Pull up the task manager. (Ctrl+Alt+Del) What are in the list for "Applications" and "Processes" ? Do the same at Safe Mode and compare the lists. That may tell you why "every works fine" while in Safe Mode.

CHECKED TASK MANAGER

I pulled up the task manager on NORMAL MODE and on PROCESSES there's a ton of things running. How do I stop them from running? Thanks in advance.

Isolate...

....the offending programs, services or processes. From the list at Normal mode, cross off those which also appear at Safe Mode (these are needed). Then read this current thread. Disable, test, then enable the items one by one until you find the culprit. Go through the list at 'msconfig' and 'services.msc'.

Slow Computer (XP prof)

I had the same slowdown with most folders that I loaded. As you found, hardly anything will help. I started Uninstalling ANY unnecessary downloaded programs, and also the ones I had the original CD for and finally got the one that was conflicting with something else! It may take quite a bit of trying, but it was worth it for me! Now My computer is back up to its original speed. Be sure to take all the shortcuts to the uninstalled programs off. Look everywhere for any part that still remains and get rid of it. This worked for Me, Sure hope it will for you.
