XP pro-98se dualboot questions

Nov 17, 2003 11:50PM PST

The more I read on doing this the more I get confused, have a user with a XPpro box-single drive, who also needs a drive ( which he already has ) with 98SE ( already on it also) to go in as Primary slave, How/what might I do to set a boot select screen at startup for them?? Both drives are fat32, or is it too late to set something like this up?? Or maybe find a switch of some sort to make C-D and vice versa...??? Thanks for any help..

It's decision time. There's little reason to boot to 98 if XP is running well on the machine. I can't find such a reason and as such, that has been my solution.

I do come across a few people who can't reinstall an application and that can be one reason not to make the move, but that's called "borrowed time" and eventually something will break, vanish, stop spinning and then the decision will have to be made.

Why not just install the OS you want to use and ignore the other?

He has functional things on the 98se drive that will not install / work on XP, perhaps will try putting it (98se Drive) in as sec master- and when he needs that drive-open side and switch IDE cables.( nearly what he does now..)

Or you can do this...

1. Change the Boot Sequence to boot from IDE 2 if that is the drive with Win98SE when he want to boot into Win98.

2. Another option is to use removal trays for both HDD and swap them when he want to boot into a different OS.

But if a more convenient solution is called for then start over and set up dual-boot.

Option of reload 98 to other drive-or the swappable removables and that'll suit him fine-easier than nearly anything else to setup-( No cd needed in his box) now I'll just watch and see how many times a week he really need 98se... thanks...

I have both OS on the same HD and they are both in Fat32 with 98se then xphome and with MS boot up screen which gives the option to go to 98se or xp. 98 is on the C and xp is on the D partition. U can also use partionmagic 8 as low as $21.) which lets u put one in front of the other and not the newer last as u have to do with MS. Use winxp startup disk to go to CD start and then XP will let u partition and add. I always load programs on both sides incase that u want xp to go to Ntfs files. I too have a very lot of old programs and games that run on the win98 side only. Also I just like to revert sometimes back to 98 (nostalgia I guess and by the way with some things it is a lot faster than xp)LOL Gerald
