xp not picking up driver

Aug 28, 2007 6:56PM PDT

I have a Lucent PCMCIA Modem, Windows XP installs it's own generic Lucent driver, it does install but doesn't function as expected so would like to install the Manufacturers version of the driver. However when trying to do a manual install, or upgrade the driver it will only select the windows generic one saying it is the best, without any further options. Is there a way I can disable this functionality or manually install the manufacturers driver.

Thanks

How I manually install the driver.

It depends on the driver but the usual is to download the driver, unzip if needed then read it's install notes. That's all there is to it.

You are right that the Update Driver button is usually not the right answer.

tried that already

Thanks, done that already.

The problem is when the driver is removed and scan for hardware changes is invoked, it automatically installs the generic driver, without letting me specify the manufacturers driver. What I am actually going to do is remove modems.sys from System32 folder and see if it will choose the manufacturers driver. Otherwise I don't know what to do.

I have checked all the internet settings with the ISP and the modem works in my NT machine. Any more suggestions would be great full.

Sorry but I found that does not work.

Many drivers don't install like that.

Again, that method may work for some hardware but not this one.

Sadly I can't help further with more exact instructions since you are not sharing gritty details and links to the driver you want to install. Maybe if I had access to that I could double check if this is how to install your new driver.

Ahh that one.

If you look inside the zip you find the .inf file. I see no readme so the method I use for this one is to extract all the files to a temp directory then explore to that. Now I I usually have to do is to right click on the .INF file and select INSTALL.

The add remove hardware might work too but try the easy way first. For add remove hardware you tell it to look at that directory you put those files in.

-> Notice there is no replacement for that file you noted above? That's proper...
