XP - MS Office Access Privileges

Feb 15, 2009 2:48AM PST

Recently my wife and I are having problems accessing picture and word document files. We keep getting the following message: "...cannot open the document: user does not have access privileges..."

We have tried entering user accounts and allowing access and have run Trend Micro's PC-Illin virus scan and RegCure to no avail.

The computer is an eMachines T6524 with an AMD Athlon 64 processor running at 2.2 ghz with 3 gb RAM. System software is Windows XP Media Center edition, version 2002 with service pack 3.

Please advise on how to unlock these files and prevent the same from happening in the future. THanks!

Not a locking issue. Take Ownership of that file.

Prevention of same issue

Is there any way of preventing this from happening in the future? As we did not do anything to change the permissions. THanks.

Followed MS Support directions - still no dice
Feb 15, 2009 4:43AM PST

Bob,

I followed the directions on 'how to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP' from the attached link. I am still getting the message that I do not have access privileges, however I do have an administrator account. Is there something I missed?

Thanks,

Chip

Cannot open documents in notepad. Nor save them in another format

My wife showed me where she could take a jpeg, move it to a new file and lose all privileges to view or delete the item. SHe then logged on to my sign-in and we were able to delete the jpeg file from there, but could not view it. THe deleted file did not show up in the recycle bin. So this is an on-going issue.

Where are these files at?

Be specific. A drive letter, and path please.

Finally A Solution
Feb 15, 2009 7:29AM PST

Right clicked the file and clicked Properties, then the Security Tab (securtity tab wasn't present so went in Explorer [My Computer]), clicked tools, then folder options, then View and scrolled to the bottom of the list and removed the tick from the box titled 'Use Simple File Sharing.' Clicked Apply and OK. Then right clicked the affected file and then the properties tab, then the security tab, then Advanced, then Find Now,scrolled to the user name and highlighted it then clicked OK, then OK again. Then put a tick in the 'Full Control' box in the 'Allow' column and clicked Apply and then OK. For the jpeg files I then right clicked on the file and scrolled down to refresh thumbnail to see the picture.

Everything seemed to work well. Just wanted to post the solution for others. Thanks for all your time and help!
