XP: Log Off from Start menu not working

Nov 30, 2004 10:06PM PST

I have multiple users set up.
When I am logged in as one user and want to log off I click on Start, I then click on log off. The log off window opens and I click on Log off. Instead of logging the user off, it seems to do nothing.
Just started noticing that this is happening within the past week.

The system is Windows XP Home Edition 2002 with Service Pack 2.

Any ideas on how to get the log off functionality back?

As an FYI the following logoff does work. I click on the ctrl/alt/del and in Task Manager I choose the Users tab and then click on the user and then click logoff.

Had a problem like that with a system at work. The system will eventually log off, it will just take a few minutes. In my case, it turned out to be buggy drivers from HP for a scanner attached to it.

So, if you have any older hardware attached to the system, try disconnecting it for a bit. Also be sure to update any and all drivers for the system.

Then also be sure to do a spyware sweep, and probably an anti-virus one just to be thurough. Finally be sure to hit the Windows Update site. Don't think more than one or two security updates have been released for XP since SP2, but it can't hurt to check.
