Xp installation hangs....

Jul 21, 2007 10:20AM PDT

Hi...ive had this problem for a while now...I'm going to copy and paste my message from a different forum to see what you guys think:

-------------------
Hi, i had a problem with my computer in this thread-&gtSadhttp://www.techsupportforum.com/hardware-support/motherboards-bios-cpu/166533-e6600-screwed-new-post.html), and someone told me to do a clean install of Windows.

I put in the CD, wiped my old partition, and at first chose to do a quick reformat...but it was taking a horrendous amount of time to copy the files, so i turned the computer off. Next, i wiped that partition, and created a 30gb partition and did a full reformat to see if that was the problem, but it wasn't. So far, ive been installing for 2.5-3 hours and its at about 40%. The Dvd-drive led indicator basically comes on and flashes, and i can see the files changing on the screen, but then the led will go off after a few files and stay off for about half an hour or longer before it flashes again. I have absolutely no idea what the problem is, here's my compute specs, everything is new:

Core 2 Duo E6600

600w GameXStream PSU

Nvidia 8800GTS 640mb

Western Digital 250gb 7200rpm hd

2 x 1gb G.Skill RAM

Samsung DVd Burner
-------------------

Ok so basically i cant get XP to install, i even left it running overnight for 8 hours and when i woke up it was at 53% done, this is durign the copying files step by the way

Ok, let's check off a few common issues.

1. You have the XP SP2 CD.

2. You use the F6 key and give it the SATA drivers.
(Sorry but you didn't reveal if your drives are SATA)

3. You unplugged all USB devices until later.
(Your machine's inventory is unknown.)

yes, i have the Xp Sp2 Cd, no, i do not need to install sata drivers even though my hard drive and dvd drives are sata, and i unplugged all usb deviced except for the usb keyboard...but it doesnt really matter since ive already installed xp once and it worked fine, and that time i had a few usb devices plugged in and didnt install any sata drivers....i know something else is wrong

I think you are repeating a problem.

I've heard people try this without the F6+diskette and fail. I have failed at this one too and know to go get the diskette and move on.

I know something is wrong and will change my install methods rather than insist I'm doing it right. Occasionally I run into people that won't try it any other way. We give them more rope...
