Before I start, if this is a new system, any hardware issue must be cured or you will have any number of issues installing an OS. The Athlon machines are full of fun games as I find people who don't have uptodate BIOS's, won't load the safest BIOS settings or try such on 300 or 350 Watt power supplies. After you have the machine's BIOS uptodate, and have the FSB set to 100 or 200 MHz instead of 133, 266 or such, set the AGP to 1X and don't plug any USB devices in and try again.
"Having experienced a number of troubles, I eventually followed instructions and used FDISK off my Win98 disk to delete the partition, create it and then format c.
The trouble I now have is how to install XP. I have my Windows XP disk, and when I boot from it I get the expected blue screen of Windows Setup, but then I get the message:
"STOP: c0000221 Unknown Hard Error \SystemRoot\System32\ntdll.dll"
Searches would suggest that this means I need to replace the ntdll.dll file, but I have no idea how or whether that's possible.
Is there any alternative way of installing XP?
Specs: Athlon 2200+, GeForce Ti4400, 512 RAM.."
1. USING FDISK FROM WINDOWS 98 is not needed. And I find can derail an install. BUT in this case, I'd bet on outdated BIOS or other hardware issue since XP glides onto good hardware.
2. Read http://www.blackviper.com/Articles/OS/InstallXPPro/installxppro1.htm
Pictures and more showing how to use XP's installer to prepare the hard disk.
