xp host vista client no internet

hi all,
I am trying to network (adhoc) an xp(sp3) host with cellular modem and a vista client. My first attempt with this using the network setup wizards actually worked, i was able to browse the internet on the vista client. After shut down on both I have not been able to get it to work again. ICS is enabled on the host, i reran the wizards with a new network, I tried static ip addresses, I tried to set them up manually and can consistantly get the comps connected and sharing files but no internet on the vista client. I have avg on the host and no antivirus on the client. I did notice using ipconfig that there are no values for default gateway on either?
