1. Be spyware free. I note the usual tools at http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6132-0.html?forumID=32&threadID=1313&messageID=15002
2. Cure the shutdown issue. Read http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.php
Item 2's reading may not note the need for latest drivers. MICROSOFT WILL NOT DO THIS FOR YOU. You get to deal with motherboard and all other drivers.

I have an MB-MSI-845PE running MS XP Home ed.
Problems have pilled up. The most irksome is it won't completely shut down or enter standby.
The system shutdown goes thru 'saving your settings then closes and freezes at a blank screen. Waited for it to close and shut down all the way thru making and eating dinner but it did not.
To shut off I held (on/off) button several seconds and system almost shut off. The numLock light on keyboard stayed on. I finally used the on/off switch at back of mid-tower to make everything shut down.
When I restart system my USB trackball mouse does not work and I have to turn off then on system many times to get it to work. The basic MS mouse next to KB works, the USB ports on the front of tower work.
Seriously considering a .357 mag upgrade.
