XP Hogging My Memory

Jul 26, 2007 11:35PM PDT

Hello, I just added another stick of RAM boosting my total to 4 GB. However my available memory is only 756MB! I had allocated 2 GB to Photoshop before this upgrade and it was working fine but now I am at 756 MB. How do I limit XP 's memory usage to about 1 GB?
Thanks, Ren

That's proper. In fact you want 0 bytes free!

Any VM based OS should eat every byte of RAM. Here's an article that explains it. -> http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.php

?Free RAM is wasted RAM?.

Nothing busted here. To limit XP's memory to 1GB there is a limit memory in MSCONFIG but that's just as bad as installing only 1GB!

Since you have over 2GB ram, a switch you need to know about

Thank You, /3GB Switch Fixed All

Thank you for your fast accurate reply. I modified the Boot.ini file with the /3GB switch and now Photoshop is allowing me 2.7 GB! I have limited this to 2 GB as this is all Photoshop can use.
Have a great weekend, Ren
