XP freeze at start up after SP2

by balmain_bob / September 18, 2004 8:32 AM PDT

OS XP Service Pack 2.AMD Atholon 600mg.Mother board MSI MS-6195.512 Installed memory.
G'day Upgraded to XP Pro after refomat of 'C'.Everything going well very pleased with new system, went to Windows Update & proceeded to download SP2 as it was a critical up date,as I'm a dial up user it took 5 hours over 3 days.Followed instructions as to back up etc.Installed SP2 after restart screen froze in the middle of loading & had to hit reset button & go to 'safe mode'.
Went back to Update & it was again showing insall SP2 after it analysed my PC. So went & installed it again.Same thing happened.Lost approximately 4 Gigabytes of disk space doing this double installation.
Can anybody recommend a solution,& also recovery of vital disk space as I'm down to 11.64 Gigabytes from 13.33

WinXP SP2 FAQ: What to do after installing SP2;ln;xpsp2installed

and do a search in CNET useing this forum type in XP2 youll find all kinds of info posted already.

Good Luck!

Microsoft Windows XP won't allow you to uninstall Internet Explorer. How can you fix the browser or even reinstall the program if it becomes corrupt?

If you don't yet have the very latest Internet Explorer, you can fix many problems by visiting and updating to the latest version.
If you're already up to date, however, the site won't let you reinstall the program. You need to fool the system into thinking you don't have the latest version.

Launch REGEDIT from the Start menu's Run dialog and navigate to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}. In the right-hand pane, double-click on the DWORD value IsInstalled and change it from 1 to 0 (no matter whether you choose Decimal or Hexadecimal). Close REGEDIT and go to the Windows update site again. Now it should let you "update" IE and, with luck, fix the problems.

By the way, you can do the same thing if you need to repair Outlook Express, but at the key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}.
