XP fails on boot-up.... then...

Jun 1, 2005 1:37AM PDT

Hey,

Im greatful for all the help u can give me, as im utterly clueless... and i like to consider myself to have a DECENT knowledge of computers - although litterly nothing compared to you folks Happy

Ok... heres the situation

I format fairly often, or have been formatting fairly often in recent times, due to the fact i get a bit pissed off with my computer..

P4 - 2.8ghz
512mb ram
GeForce 5600 FX
and uhm ye thats about it really not sure what kinda of motherboard ive got - if u think it might be nessecary lemme know ill find out

Ok, when i format and i install all the drivers... everythings going gr8... anti-virus the lot...

i surf the web and goto a site requiring flash,
it then asks me to download flash player - or whatever - so i accept, because... i know that its pretty safe...

it then asks me to reboot, so i do...

it comes to hte XP loading screen with the blue lines going horizontal... and thats where it stops.. i decided to see if it would eventually get past it so i left it on all nite and all day - longest time my computers not been used for... and it still hadnt moved.. so i assumed something was up...

i restarted the computer and tried to retry with last good configuration, yes it booted up, but nothing would work, AVG - anti-virus wouldnt load, my bluetooth thing didnt think it was plugged in... media player 10 would die on me.

I assumed this was "normal" so i reinstalled all teh programs and hoped that it might work... but most of hte installations would tell me that they couldnt be completed and try again...

i reckon it was the flash that caused this to happen, yet im not sure why, anyone care to shed some light on my problem and perhalps how to fix it

would be greatly appriciated ... thanks very much!!

Just guessing.

Given what you wrote, I would do this:

-> Go get the hard disk drive fitness test from your hard disk maker's web site and run it.

Just what I would inspect first given your story.

-> Other items would be to get your hijackthis log so I can look under the hood.

I have this disk. I downloaded 'powermax' from Maxtor's site onto A: drive and ran a diagnostic. It takes a while, and you have to get into the BIOS to convert to start from floppy. After booting let it take over and follow instructions on a DOS type screen.
