xp does not recognise my cd rom drives

I understand that XP/sp3 does not need drivers for cd rom drives - nec/rw and sony

However,xp does not recognise my cd rom drives.

Please advise

Did you check to see if they show in the BIOS?

I'd go there first. As well, can you say something about how these were installed and to what kind of ports?

I don't think that the bios is at fault because when I change the hd to one with win 2000 it recognizes the roms

So you don't even care to look?

Then try Grif's idea below. That might work. Sorry I could only offer troubleshooting but not a solution. I prefer to look things over before throwing possible fixes at something. Good luck.
