XP crashes/restarts when installing software from CD, but...

Jul 18, 2007 4:45PM PDT

it is not the hardware's issue, as this is a dual-boot windows ME and new installation of XP (w/SP2) home and this never happens when it is running ME, only XP (they are on different drives). What can this be due to, and how can I tweak my XP software to not crash (and create a need for system restore due to errors!) everytime I want to install software from a CD?

Which software?

Some questions for you;

1] Is this CD Software, eg CD burning software, or is it software applications you are trying to install from a CD?

2] Is this any CD? What about music stored on a CD, can you play that in XP?

3] Did you install the XP CD ROM drivers when you installed XP?

4] Any BSOD, (Blue Screens of Death), when the system crashes? If so, what error codes/messages?

{If there are no BSOD's because the system reboots too quickly, disable the Automatic Restart on System failure in System Properties. Right click the My Computer icon, select Properties, click the Advanced tab, then the Settings button under "Startup and Recovery", then remove the tick under "Automatic Restart". This will halt any reboot and give you time to read any error messages.}

5] What does the Event Viewer say? (Start > Run, type in eventvwr.msc then click OK, then in the Event Viewer under either Applications or System, highlight any errors, right click, and select Properties).

The memory management changed radically from ME to XP. In short, the OS used to run in low ram on ME and is now in high memory. This can cause errors in some machines. You have made an assumption that the machine is fine since ME runs. Sorry that isn't true.

Back to the drawing board. Test your memory with MEMTEST86 and tell a bit about the machine as to age, how long since you cleaned the heatsinks, checked fans, etc.

I was running XP Pro before the clean install of the XP Home

so I think the machine is okay, though it is older. AMD 900 MHZ processer, 512 RAM, I clean the fans and all regularly.
As for CD drivers, I don't have any of the yellow exclaimation marks next to any of the devices. I can play CDs. I was trying to install Nero burning ROM software. I have also had the crash happen when I try to copy large files from the CD rom when I am in XP (but not ME).
There are a whole lot of error messages in the event viewer.
Including, many under system, most look like the first here:
AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to read from an illegal IO port address (0x71), which lies in the 0x70 - 0x71 protected address range. This could lead to system instability. Please contact your system vendor for technical assistance.
Also :
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\CdRom

others, not as frequent:

Error code 10000050, parameter1 e2734000, parameter2 00000000, parameter3 8054b533, parameter4 00000001.
AND:
DCOM got error "This service cannot be started in Safe Mode " attempting to start the service EventSystem with arguments "" in order to run the server:

NetBIOS
NetBT

There were some application and winmanagement errors under that category, but I am assuming the ones I already outlined might give some information about the problem. Thanks!!

You found the error!!!

"ACPI BIOS is attempting to read from an illegal IO port address (0x71)"

This error is well known and it means your BIOS is not XP compatible. See if they issued a fixed version.
