XP crashes after computer upgrades when system has high demands...

Nov 17, 2003 9:03AM PST

Recently, I upgraded my system with the following:

Windows XP Home Edition
ATI Radeon 9000 Pro Video Card
AMD Athlon XP 2200+ Processor (1.80GHz)
512 MB PC2100 DDR RAM Memory
NEC DVD Burner

As far as I can tell, I have installed everything correctly, and have went online numerous times for updated drivers, software, etc.

PROBLEM: Under normal, everyday use, Windows and most applications work fine. The programs will load properly, and will function under light task loads. However - every time the system gets over-taxed (high processor/memory demand, big files, etc.), it either shuts down the current program, locks up, or reboots. This happens when using any of the following - Windows Movie Maker, Roxio DVD Builder, Pinnacle Studio AV 7 Video Editor, Microsoft Outlook, Internet Explorer, and the list goes on.
It is especially frustrating when trying to create and burn a DVD, when it will encode about half of the video, then shut down the program.

SOLUTION???: Is it video card drivers? Software drivers? Windows XP improper installation? (I do have two separate hard drives - one to run programs, and the other for large file storage) Not enough memory? A slow processor?

Please Help!
Any and all suggestions
would be greatly appreciated!

Common issues abound. But stress seems to point to power supply issues (that's a loaded system, try 450 Watts minimum) or a memory issue. Try setting the FSB speed from 266 to 200 or 133 to 100 and see if it stabilizes.

To see if heat is an issue, remove the cover and point a fan at the internals.

NTSF?
Other programs running in background?
No mention of audio card.
Exactly which program to encode what type files?
Codecs in use?
