How can I remove programs from the control panel
that seem to remain, even after they have been removed
with the add and remove option.

Thanks!

There are parasites and pests that offer an Add/Remove item, but will not really uninstall. These are called by many names such as MALWARE. Removal can be specific to the program you are trying to excise.

I do list five tools I use to eject most parasites with ease at http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6132-0.html?forumID=32&threadID=1313&start=0

Beyond that, HIJACKTHIS is a noted tool to examine the machine in more detail and STARTER is a good tool to remove startup items with ease.

Bottomline? It all depends on the installed software title and what is known about it.

Easy as cake.

The jv16 Powertools 1.3.0.196 (last freeware version) OS: Win9x/ME/NT4/2000/XP at http://www.321download.com/LastFreeware/ has that feature as well as TWEAKUI for XP will give you some control.

AS, If you mean items (icons) actually appearing in the Control Panel itself then do a Start/Search for all files and folders, type in *.cpl and search your hard drive. It will show you all possible Control Panel extensions and you'll have to find the ones you want to get rid of (those programs you uninstalled but the Control Panel icon still appears). When you find them just right click them and click delete. This should remove them from the Control Panel. If you mean items in the Add/Remove Programs follow Bob's advice.
