Question

XP Computer won't start, red light flashing and beeping

I haven't used this computer for a while. When I try to start it a red light, the one next to the green harddrive light, is flashing and there is a beeping. Nothing else happens. How can I start it to see what is wrong. Does all this mean something

Make, model, age, if you are going to fix it by replacing parts, etc.

flashing red light

is trying to read the hard drive. Suggests it's not able to. Use a bootable DVD and after booting to it, open the file manager on the DVD and see if you can access the hard drive that way.

I suggest a Knoppix, Ubuntu, or Mint, Linux DVD.

If you don't know how to burn an ISO image to a DVD to expand the image onto the DVD properly (NOT burning the single ISO file onto the DVD), you can pick up one cheaply here. If in doubt about your computer ability, and also for all around general purpose on older computers, I'd advise getting a 32 bit version. If you have windows 8, then would want a 64 bit version for sure.

BIOS

In reply to: flashing red light

Enter the BIOS and check the clock time. If it's badly off, your BIOS battery may be down and the settings set to default.
If the working computer did not use the default BIOS settings, you may have to set them
