This is but one of the many downloadsites: http://www.brothersoft.com/winsockfix-66663.html
Sorry for the lack of technical info, but I'm just looking for some suggestions of things to investigate as I've reached the bottom of my bag of tricks. Here's the situation:
-Windows XP getting IP etc. via DHCP
-This machine has been working fine for years. No settings were changed when the problem started happening, although it did report an IP address conflict for an unknown reason about the time this started. I manage the home network and there is no other machine that has or has had the PC's IP address.
-At the command prompt I can ping with no problems. No lost packets at all. Ping can even resolve names (e.g. ping www.yahoo.com).
-Neither IE nor Firefox can browse. Their status bars show "connecting to http://www.yahoo.com..." for about a minute and then they give me a cannot connect to server/connection time out message.
-I have tried ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew
-I have tried assigning all of the TCP info manually
-Noting seems to change the fact the ping work fine, but the browsers can't browse.
-Windows firewall is turned off
-ZoneAlarm is installed, but has been running just fine on this machine for years. None of its setting seem to indicate that browsers would be blocked for doing anything.
So, I suspect there is some middle layer that I'm not familiar with that's somehow blocking traffic or something. Any hints as to the things I should look for?
