Never ran into that before but ...

if you "really need to go into safe mode" you can try the following quick edit of yopur boot.ini file.

Add safe mode to the boot.ini file

Add the following line (or lines) at the bottom of the boot.ini file

This line gets you safeboot without network support
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional Safe" /fastdetect /SAFEBOOT:MINIMAL

This line gets you safeboot with network support
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional Safe" /fastdetect /SAFEBOOT:NETWORK

The option to boot into safe mode will now appear on the boot loader menu so you don't have to play with the F8 key.

NOTE 1: if the directory youw Windows is installed to is something other than "Windows" (such as possibly "Winnt"), change the bolded portion of each line to insdicate the actual location of your own Windows installation.

NOTE 2: if the ARC path shown above differs from that showing in your own boot.ini file change the numerical values of multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1) to reflect those shown in your own boot.ini. Also if by some chance yours starts with scsi instead of multi edit the above lines to reflect the scsi.

Just in case you are confused here is a link that explains the ARC path -

Here is a link for step by step editing of the boot.ini file -

It still does the same...
Im going through something much bigger than just wanting to start safe mode
You see my kaspersky wont start and i thaught i would go into safe mode and fix it
everytime i try starting kaspersky they say it has encountered a serious error
the only time i was able to go into safe ( and install kaspersky properly ) was when i used combofix and it only helped once
now the pc still reboots whenever i try going into safe mode...
I want to go into safe mode and scan the pc for viruses and trojans
i already scanned my pc with malawarebytes and s[ybot
i also fixed the registry using WinASO Registry Optimizer 4.0.7
My pc is windows xp SP2
its ram is about 2gb and its about 3.1 Ghz
( if this helps after i installed kaspersky Msn started encountring " a serious error " )
This has never happned to me before i just recently formatted my pc ( like 1 week ago )
and i had McAfee installed but one day i dont know what happned it wasnt there anymore [ maybe i uninstalled it by accident ]
Thats when i decided to use kaspersky {my old anti virus}

Is there any other way of fixing this other than going in safe mode ( which isnt happening at the moment the pc just reboots after i press safe mode but it starts normally )
Maybe a virus is causing this or something..
I really dont want to format my pc again !

Thank you for your time!
