Aug 27, 2007 4:01AM PDT

W98 had a folder called "applications" .Is there one in XP

Thanks

Applications folder in XP is different
Aug 27, 2007 4:57AM PDT

It's called "Applications Data" is specific to the logged in use. There are actually two such folders for a user. The other is in the "Local Settings" folder. The "Program Files" folder contains the applications themselves. Each defined user gets his/her own data folder that mostly contains customized settings for the individual applications. Another folder...separate from the applications data...holds created documents from such as office suites etc. As an example of applications data, email for the logged on user will be there as well as the browser cache. It can get very confusing trying to find stuff through explorer that are readily available from the application you are using. Hope this helps in a small way.

Thanks but

I cannot find any of the things you mention. Even "search" denies they exist! Appreciate your advice though and may need to get a book on XP as it has me gritting my teeth. From a user point of view I think if Mr. Gates deliberately ordered his staff to produce an OS which could thoroughly confuse the user he has succeeded!

Using explorer
Aug 27, 2007 5:42AM PDT

Click on My Computer, go to the C: or whatever is the boot drive and go to Documents and Settings. From there you will see the defined users. Every user who logs on will have a bunch of stuff created as a repository for their junk. Some folders are hidden from view. You can go (from Explorer) to Tools/Folder Options/View and see a list of changes you can make. XP Home is a little different than Pro as far as running as "The" Administrator. That's only available in safe mode if you need to tweak at that level. You said you needed to access certain applications to make them work properly. I am assuming you mean from Windows Explorer but could be wrong. I'm not sure what good that does other than let you view files, move things around, etc. Maybe a bit more about your objective would get a better answer from someone. Good luck.
