xp amnesia: not retaining network settings

by dubdub / May 30, 2004 1:18 PM PDT

I set up a wireless router a few months ago, networking my sony vaio desktop (wired) to my apple powerbook (wireless), and sharing a DSL connection. The problem is that the vaio doesn't remember any of the network settings after shutdown/restart, so I have to go to the "set up a network" wizard every time the machine is rebooted to get back online (there are a few users on the vaio, and they tend to turn the machine off instead into standby, despite what I advise). If I logout, or put the machine into standby mode, it remembers the settings just fine.

Any suggestions?

All of the network settings are lost; it doesn't remember that it receives it's ip addy via DHCP from the router (ip always reads 0.0.0.0 after restart) which is the primary issue, so it can't get online or communicate with other devices on the lan, until the settings are specified again. I was hoping that maybe there is some network config file that I could edit manually, and be done with it, but I get the feeling that it may not be that easy...

As for the utilities, I do have adaware, nav, and spychecker, but I'll have to try the others to see how well they fare.

Thanks for the help, and have a great memorial day...
