Xeon - Ht - itanium???

Apr 14, 2005 6:53AM PDT

Hey People.

Well here is the case. I am building a new coputer and i started researching for processors and all that stuff. Well i'm not that much into those stuff so i need some help concering that.

As a start, if possible, can u tell me what is the difference between a Desktop and a Workstation? some people told me a workstation is a powerfull desktop!! is it?

two: as i was going thru intel processors, i saw the Xeon and the HyperThreading technologies (what is the exact differnce, i have no idea. all i know is that HT is somehow dual processor). other than that there is something known as itanium (not sure of the name though).

After i know this there is a big series of questoins i need to ask.

Thank you anyway,
ZiMAD

Xeon - Ht - itanium

Are highend EXPENSIVE processors that are used in EXPENSIVE servers.
Workstaion and desktop usualy mean the same thing.
In the office it's a workstation at home it's a desktop.
Hyper Threading Is Intel's way of boosting processor speed ( to the OS it looks like a dual processor)if the software is written fore it. John

Can u give more details about HT-Xeon-itanium.
Apr 15, 2005 10:57PM PDT

Well thank u for the help. But i was wondering can i know more details about Xeon, HT, and itanium. ok here is what i want.

I'm building a computer, where i need to use for rendering (3D and AfterEffects mainly) plus i use Photoshop Effects alot. So i need a computer that would make my life easier. I don't really care about money cuz my boss will pay for it Silly. So if u can tell me the difference between those processors that would be great.

one more thing, if u have knowledge of Graphic Cards let me know.

Thank u again,
ZiMAD

And Intel will ship Dual Core
Apr 16, 2005 12:19AM PDT

P4's this week. The Extreme Edition Dual Core with hyperthreading [supports four processes] will sell for $1000 in quantity to dealers, and need a specific chipset. May be worth waiting for.

Check places such as http://www.tomshardware.com and http://www.anadtech.com for detailed articles and tests on these newer systems, they get advanced hardware from the mfrs to test.

Hyperthreading is simply an architecture that allows two processes to be handled within the CPU at the same time, but limited by the fact that they still have to share some of the registers et al, so it is not the same as dual core where there are actually two complete processing computers in the chip.

This will probably give home system capability close to the xeon or itanium. If I remember correctly, the itanium hasn't really set the world on fire, and xeons seem to be used mostly for servers.

There are two families of graphics cards, all expensive. There are those for gaming and those for intensive graphics such as for design work using autocad type stuff, which cost even more than the gaming cards [except for maybe the dual gamers SLI card(s) from nVidia].
