xbox hdmi 1080p specific issue

Jan 10, 2010 10:03PM PST

hi. yet another post about xbox hdmi issues! i looked through other similar threads but didnt find my exact issue.

I bought a xbox 360 elite 2 weeks ago and a non-MS hdmi cable. hooked it up to my hd 1080p capable lcd monitor and it autodetected 1080p display settigns ok, no problem there. tried connecting it to my 1080p capable hdtv, no problem, picture displays in 1080p. sound is fine on both.

However, last night when i connected it to my hdtv in 1080p i had issues with the screen output and sound >> initially the sound did not come through. I reattached the hdmi cable and on bootup i saw the xbox startup screen popup for about a second and then it disappeared. reappeared after about 10 secs for 1 sec and then disappeared. then reappeared after 10 secs with horrible red lines on the xbox dashboard, after a couple of seconds then the screen showed 'no input detected' with no picture.

powercycled xbox and tv > no help, same issue occurs. tried another (cheaper) hdmi cable, but this one doesnt show anything at all, just the 'no input detected'.

tried both cables with my monitor on 1080p, neither shows no output from xbox.

tried the original composite red yellow white cables on hdtv and it shows standard picture fine.

reattached the slightly better working hdmi cable and managed to set my hdtv to 1080i > now the picture and sounds show ok, though occasionally i may see a small flicker of red lines on part of the screen, overall its ok and sound is fine too.

tried the other 'cheaper' cable on the tv and got way more red lines and poor audio.

anytime i try 1080p output with hdmi the same issues persist.

so with my current setup now i am stuck with 1080i output from my xbox. any suggestions from anyone??

>> should i buy another (better/expensive?) hdmi cable and try that to get back to 1080p?

i assume buying component reg green blue cables will only give me the same 1080i standard of hd? which i already get via the 'better' hdmi cable.

how about MS's own 'Xbox 360 Component HD AV Cable', is it worth it >> could that output 1080p?

or should i just send the elite back to MS and get another one from them?

sorry for the long post. any help appreciated!

If it were me

If it were me, I'd take the unit back and exchange it for another one. Sounds like you have a bad graphics chip.

Alternately, you can have Microsoft repair it, but then basically you'll be without your console for about 2 weeks. Since you should still be within the return/exchange period of most stores, I'd start with that option.

You bring up a good point.

I've lost count of troubles caused by dodgy HDMI cables.

Why do you keep the ones that you know don't work well?

thanks for replies.
Im contacting ms to see if they can offer any assistance. If not, I'll be sending it off for repairs to them. the online store i bought it from would take 2 weeks as well.

to answer your question, i've kept the cheaper hdmi cable as it works fine with my dvr/hdtv connection
