Xbox 360 vga hookup

Apr 27, 2007 4:42AM PDT

Hello. I was wondering how good the vga hookup for the 360 was. Does anyone recommend it. I only have one set of component inputs on my tv and soon my cable box will be occupying them.

Probably about the same

I would wager that the VGA setup is about the same as component, however, there is another option you may want to consider. There are devices called source selectors, that let you connect multiple devices to a single set of inputs on a TV, and then switch between them.

A pretty good one, that does component video and optical audio at a reasonable price, is the Psyclone PSC-01 which you can get at most electronics stores like Best Buy and Circuit City. It has 4 inputs which can be selected via a remote, a customizable LED on the front to let you name the inputs, and as I already mentioned, it does optical audio and component video along with s-video and composite video and audio. I've been using one for a couple of months to connect my GameCube, Xbox, and PS2 to my TV and it's worked great. I've heard from others that the signal is quite clear all the way up to 1080i resolutions.

Another option is the System Selector Pro 2.0 from Pelican. Most of the comments about it I read were from some time back, so maybe they've fixed this problem, but it sounds like it can be hit or miss. Some people report having absolutely no problems, while others report having slight ghosting effects around text and other issues at high resolutions like 1080i. You get an extra 2 inputs on the System Selector Pro, but only 4 of them do optical audio. Until just recently the System Selector Pro was out of stock nearly everywhere, but now you should be able to pick it up at sites like NewEgg, Buy.com, and GameStop/EBGames locations.

Both the Psyclone and System Selector Pro also have LAN features, only on 4 of the 6 inputs for the System Selector Pro, but I don't really recommend using them. Only one device can be active on the network at a time. So if you have your Xbox 360 downloading a dashboard update, and then switch to your cable box to watch TV while you wait, it will cut off the network access to the Xbox 360.

A system selector gives you room to grow should you ever decide you want a Wii or PS3 or maybe a high def DVD player.

Thank you for all your input. I'll look into the source selectors, but it might be more then what I need.
