Xbox 360 verus PS3

Apr 29, 2007 10:04PM PDT

I think I may buy one of the new gaming systems this year but I don't know which one. I already own a PS2 and I'm liking the look of the PS3. But with the new 360 elite out its also looking good. I like some of the 360 games like Lost PLanet, Gears of War, and the upcoming Halo 3. But the promise of bigger and better games on the PS3 has held me back. Can someone please help me here. Thanks

Depends

The Xbox 360 is targeted largely at people who like casual games. The kind that you can just pick up and play for a while. Little to no actual substance to them, just lots of action.

The PlayStation has traditionally been the home for deep involving role playing type games. The kind of games that requires a pretty significant time investment to get into.

That's what it'll come down to in the end, the kind of gamer you are. Graphics wise, both consoles are pretty evenly matched. So if you're more into action games, and don't really care about story, get an Xbox 360. If you're more interested in story than graphics, get a PlayStation 3. Not that PS3 game graphics won't likely be every bit as impressive. It's just that role playing games don't traditionally tend to be boundary pushers for graphics, and role playing games have been the major differentiating factor between the PlayStation and other consoles.

i'd go with the 360
Apr 30, 2007 4:35AM PDT

like dougless said it all depends, but personally i'd go for the xbox. there are a lot of really amazing ps3 games on the way but the 360 already has a really strong library. and i disagree with dougless on the fact that the ps3 is the only place to play quality rpgs. mass effect, bioshock, and blue dragon all look like a lot of fun. the 360 is also cheaper. i'm not a microsoft fanboy; i plan on getting a ps3 eventually but because of the lack of titles i haven't yet. but anyway, if you want to enjoy your new console right away go for the 360.

Let's be clear

I never said you won't find good RPGs on the 360, I just said that Microsoft tends to focus more on action games, and FPS type games... Light on story, heavy on action.

I also said that TRADITIONALLY the PlayStation platform has been the major home to RPGs. Particularly if you like Japanese style RPGs as opposed to Western RPGs. The difference being that Japanese RPGs reflect Asian culture, where the individual is less important than the group, and Western RPGs reflect Western culture where individuality trumps all.

If things continue as they have for the past two console generations, the PS3 will have the largest selection of RPGs. Things could turn out differently, but I just really don't see that happening.

Personally~~ Ps3
Apr 30, 2007 7:39AM PDT

I really want to argue about which console is more powerful, but I think it is useless for you.
I think you are looking for xbox360 Elite(xb elite) or Ps3. Personally, Ps3 is better. The reason is Ps3 is more worthwhile to buy.
You may think xb elite is good and cheaper than Ps3, but it doesn't.
It is called elite, but only enhances the hard-drive and adds the HDMI output. It also costs you USD479. There is only DVD-9 drive, but wifi, card reader, and digitial output. You may also think HD DVD or blueray is not nessary for me. However, next generation disk will be more popular in next 1 or 2 years. It will be nessary to have a huge capacity drive. Eventually, will Microsoft (MS) make up a new xb extreme or xb 720 with HD or blueray drive? I don't trust MS at all. 9G is also not really enough for HD games. The graphical and musical dates will stuff all of the space. Anyway, I go too far, but I think Ms is still enhancing or testing the xb....On the other hand, SCE has the experience of developping the Ps and Ps2.
Last, I think you like FPS games, like GOW and Halo, and I have to say Resistance can make me, is a RPG gamer, play it overnight.

ok
Apr 30, 2007 10:48AM PDT

to be fair you did say that 360 games lacked substance. i think they have a pretty solid lineup of deep rpgs on the way. and i wouldn't even say a game like GoW lacks substance. sure the story's laughable but the production quality and replay value are both very high. i've found myself playing through the campaign quite a few times.(not to mention the online multiplayer which i heard is really solid but i don't really know because i don't use live). anyway the games he said he was interested in were lost planet, gow and halo. not quite traditional japanese rpgs. i think what we should be arguing about are action games and shooters. and microsoft already has a very good lineup of action games.

360 vs. ps3
Apr 30, 2007 1:02PM PDT

The bottom line is this. In the long run i think the ps3 will be better but as of right now its the 360. I personally think its about preference anyway. RPGS & sports games hands down ps3. FPS & racing games 360. action games we shall see who wins that in the long run because of Metal Gear Solid.

MGS
May 1, 2007 1:31AM PDT

Expect Metal Gear Solid to be on both consoles because the executives over at Konami are pushing very hard on the MGS team to make the game for both consoles due to the smaller PS3 customer base. MGS is costing a ton to produce and Konami doesn't think they can turn a profit by only selling to PS3 owners.

Basically buy a 360 if you like FPS and shooters and buy a PS3 if you like RPGs. Blu-ray is a nice bonus but most of us here would rather have a Blu-ray standalone player than use a gaming console for watching our movies.

Misinterpreted
May 1, 2007 4:30AM PDT

This is getting away from the original subject, but...

I think most people are reading what they want to see in a lot of those comments. Square-Enix is planning to turn FF13 into a franchise, like they've done with FF7 in the last couple of years (I would have much preferred FF10, or even 8, but what are you going to do). I think their current plan is to be releasing games based in some way on FF13 for the next 10 years.

There have also been comments about FF13 being multi-platform, but right now that's basically meant to mean you have FF13 for the PS3, and then a few offshoot games for mobile platforms. I haven't seen anything about the core game being released for anything but the PS3. It doesn't preclude the possibility, since the new "White" engine being used for FF13 is reportedly designed to make it easy to port to other platforms. I kind of doubt we'll see FF13 for anything but the PS3, but all bets are off for FF14. FF13 has been in development for some time, and was generally developed to be a PS3 only release. Trying to release it for the Xbox 360 would likely delay the game for at least 6 months, probably a lot longer. FF14 is likely being based on the same engine as FF13, but they have an extra 1-2 years of development time to work with, and most of the heavy lifting will have been done by the creation of the "White" engine for FF13.

There have been some public musings about whether or not Kingdom Hearts 3 will be a PS3 exclusive title or not. I'm not sure if any decisions have been made, or if they've even started work on the game in any serious way. It's unlikely it will be an exclusive title for any other console, but the odds of it being released for the PS3 and 360 I'd say are at least even money. Not so sure if there will be a Wii release of that game to be honest.

Anyway, further discussion on this subject should probably be moved to a new discussion thread, rather than continuing to pollute this one with off-topic posts.

PS3 for sure, 3 broken Xbox 360s
May 3, 2007 7:03AM PDT

I used to own an Xbox 360, but then one broke, then another, and another. So, I got sooo pissed off I just got a PS3. The PS3 is a much much much more worthwhile purchase. The elite (i think) is also one of the biggest scams Microsoft has ever tried. The HDMI input will in most cases create no improvement in picture quality and there is no way anyone could possibly use 120GB HD. I have a 60GB PS3 and have partitioned 10GB away for Linux OS and I have downloaded almost everything from the PSN, and still have like 32GB left. There is also no built in wifi, no 65nm chips(run better and cooler), and the worst of all no built in HD-DVD player. I'll give the Xbox 360 the win in online but with the new Playstation Home just beyond the horizon i would expect the playing field to become almost if not even. Also, online is free which is the best thing ever. If you want to have a console that will last for over a couple of months then you definetly want to get a PS3 but if you want a system that you will spend most of your time putting in cheap boxes to send back to MS then get a 360.

Thanks alot!!!!
May 22, 2007 9:42AM PDT

Well, that pretty much answers my question right there. I was going to by the new black Apple Macbook, and a few other things, but I think I'll drop that until next year, with all the rumours floating around about new models and chips. So now, I'll have plenty of money for the PS3. I was also going to buy a new LCD HDTV, but we're going to have a garage sale and my parents will probaly pay for most of it. (I'm 14) Thanks again, can't wait to get my PS3 in about a month.
