I haven't heard of that issue cropping up so long as the orientation of the system isn't changed while in use. At least not for a while, and it might have just been a bad batch of drives that did it in the first place.
It would be nice if Microsoft fixed this little design flaw, but it doesn't seem as if it's going to happen. So, your safest best it to always assume that every major problem ever reported with the 360 is still a possibility. Issues like the RRoD may be far less likely today, but it doesn't mean it can't still rear its ugly head. Always have some kind of contingency plan ready ahead of time, then hope you never need it.
