X11 troubles

Jul 25, 2006 11:38AM PDT

A while back, I tried to install open office on my computer. It needed X11. I used my installation DVD to no avail. I also tried downloading it from the mac website and this one. Eventually, Neo office came out and I didn't need open office anymore.

Unfortunately, I am trying to run GIMP. I just bought my macbook a little over a motnh ago. The DVD has a section for installing editing tools. One of these files is x11sdk.dmg. I've tried running that many times without success.

It's possible that the websites I've looked at explained it perfectly, but I didn't understand or it could be a different situation.

Any help would be great, but the more step-by-step the better.

Thanks in advance.

Is your question
Jul 26, 2006 6:03AM PDT

how to run x11sdk.dmg?
Does X11sdk require an installation of X11 before it will install?
Do you get an error message during the install process?

If trying to run GIMP is unfortunate, why run it at all?

What were the websites explaining to you?

I'd like to think that all of those questions aren't serious

Trying to run gimp is unfortunate because it puts me back in with this X11 stuff.

What I'm asking is how to get and use x11. The copy on my DVD doesn't install X11 and the version all of the websotes have is out of date.

What am I doing wrong?

Of course,

you have been to all the places that I would have suggested. Did you check out the Apple/Support/Discussions section. I believe there is a section dealing with X11.

X11 installed fine for me, but that is no help to you. As you have only had the machine for a very short while, have you spoken to Apple regarding the inability to install off the supplied DVD?

x11 install troubles

I'm wondering if you ever found the answer to your question, because I've run into to exactly the same problem. I want to install x-11 in order to run GIMP on my Macbook Pro and just can't figure it out, even after reading a number of how to's.

maybe a simple solution..

I've just installed x11 and GIMP and works fine... i'm wondering if you have just installed the x11.SDK instead, which is an easy mistake to make. Both the x11 app and SDK are in different folders on your MAC OS disc (C.D). You want the icon called "optional installs" which you can run then find x11 under applications.

Sorry if this is an obvious answer and something you have done already, but sometimes its the most simple solution. If anyone could tell me more about x11.SDK and what exactly it is I would be grateful as I installed this and want to know if i should remove it or not?, and how if I should ?

X11 in MacBooks

Yeap!
that?s the solution... I looked good into the CD and when I arranged the icons, I found more!... and the Optional Installs pkg was there... the easy to install X11 application was inside!
Good luck everybody!
