X11? Running GIMP and Inkscape

When I launch X11 or either of the other programs, my screen simply goes gray and I'm unable to open or use them. Once the X11 logo appeared, apparently unprompted by me. Any suggestions? Please be as detailed as possible, as I've no clue what I'm doing.

out of curiosity, what is x11?

I went to the x.org wiki page but it did little to explain what the x window system actually is, and why I should want to use it.

Hahaha. Maybe that would be best? I'm trying to get some freeware graphic programs comparible to Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator and apparently X11 is required??
