Wrt54g Firmware Issues

by ThePoopsmith / October 10, 2009 3:17 PM PDT

I have a WRT54G v8.0 wireless router and it hasn't given me any problems until I updated my January 2009 firmware to the most recent July 2009 firmware.

After updating the firmware, my router would not connect to the DNS server. As a result, I cann't access the internet with my router. I did a hard reset and reset to factory defaults, and I tried to upgrade the firmware again, but it still doesn't want to connect to the internet.

I am on Windows 7 and I am using a Speedstream 5100b Modem.

Any help is appreciated.

Thank You.

"it hasn't given me any problems until"

The lesson here is simple. Don't fix things that work. Now go find that old firmware and install that. Good luck,

I have that same router/firmware, and updated to the July 09 firmware release without any problems. The only possible difference is that I have my DNS addresses entered manually.

Try checking the DNS server addresses on your router. If there doesn't seem to be any problems, make sure your computer is getting that information in "Network Settings" (or whatever Windows7 is calling it).

Last thing, since you indicated it was a DNS issue, try simply entering the DNS addresses manually on your computer.

Thanks sunwalker, I ended up going to my modem settings and changed "Use a private IP address" to "Use a public IP address" then I manually set the DNS in my (TCP/IPv4) network administration to

Works great now. Thanks!!

Oh and R.Profit, you are usually the one who gives me the helpful information. Not this time! I am just a nut who always has to have all my hardware/software up to date.

Well I realize now that it is probably not a good idea to be using the public IP setting...

My router is plugged in and everything but the router doesnt really seem to be masking my IP. I tested if my port was forwarded properly for a torrent program and it showed my real IP address, instead of

Well my router does not connect to the internet when using the "private IP" setting on my modem. Any suggestions?

That's how it should be.

It's like changing the number on your mailbox. You may not get mail if you change that number. Your internet IP has to be known by those that send you packets, etc.
