Wrong version of SP2????

Jul 29, 2007 2:31AM PDT

I have the auto-update feature turned on for XP. A few days ago the words "Windows XP Professional Build 2600.xpsp_sp2-gdr.070227-2254 (Service Pack 2)" appeared in the lower right corner of the screen. At the same time, I started having new problems. When I search "My Computer" it takes up to 5 minutes to find the drives. All other files can be searched without problems.....but I don't run XP Professional...I am running the Media Edition. Any ideas?

Have you scanned for viruses, spyware, etc? If you haven't, definitely do so.

Try going to Start > Control Panel > Folder Options > View tab. Remove the checkmark (if checked) from "Automatically search for network folders and printers.

Hope this is helpful.

I have checked for viruses, spyware, adware. No problems reported.

Three points...

1.) Windows XP Media Center is more or less Windows XP Professional with added functionality, and internally it's labeled as XP Professional build 2600, so that actually is the correct service pack. No worries there.

2.) Right-click this link, saving the file to your desktop. Then double-click it and confirm that you wish to import the entries into your registry. It's a fix offered by fellow Microsoft MVP Kelly Theriot designed to reduce the delay opening My Computer, which may resolve the issue you're facing.

3.) See this Microsoft KB article and be sure to disable the Windows Image Acquisition Service as instructed.

Hope this helps,
John
