bait..

aw, what the heck, I'll go ya.

Gates and his crew are software (Xbox excluded). Apple is a closed-system that includes software and hardware.

As a former PC user and now Mac user, personally I don't think MS is evil, I just think Apple makes a better, more integrated, more user-friendly machine and OS.

Good thing MS "bailed them out." Apple has been driving many changes to the industry, helping to keep other major players on their toes, and promoting the computer as an integral part of life for the non-technical person (90% of the population) and reminding everyone that the KISS rule (keep it simple, stupid) works - case in point: 6 button remote vs. 42 button.

No Altruism

Don't ever think the money that Microsoft tossed Apple's way was some altruistic gesture. It seemed obvious to everybody at the time that Microsoft did it to keep Apple on life support so if the Justic Department accused them of being a monopoly, they could point to Apple and the Unix crowd and shout "NOT." This was well before Linux really took root and became a viable alternative to corporate America (who already had a huge investment in their hardware). At the very least, it was helping to preserve a very profitable side of their business since a higher percentage of Macintosh owners actually BUY the software they use.

Apple very likely would have died had the World Wide Web not come along when it did and leveled the playing field. As long as a browser could parse HTML, it didn't matter which platform it ran on. I credit that for saving Apple - not a token cash infusion from Microsoft.

And for the record, I'm one Mac user who doesn't hate Microsoft. I just don't like their products. I figure Bill Gates is actually a far better human being than Steve Jobs but I don't know that because I've never interacted with either one.
