General discussion

Wow! Can we be talking about US politics???

"US politician insists on chaperone for interview with female reporter"

Somewhat misleading headline. From just later in the story:

"Larrison Campbell, 40, said she had asked to shadow Robert Foster on a 15-hour "ride-a-long" on his campaign, but was denied because of her sex."

The BBC's Katty Kay followed several presidential candidates in 2016, and I could see many opportunities for hanky panky. (And she's married with four kids, I believe.)
Good choice, Foster. Now if only you would get out of man's government and into Jehovah's ...
Like the guy in Michigan who recently dropped out of GOP ... to become Libertarian.
Guys, close counts only in horseshoes and hand grenades.

It's a far different world we live in today and, with our media constantly looking for dirt, one needs to be cautious. The man, as I read, doesn't want go give the media the opportunity to see them alone together for extended periods. National Enquirer made tons of money on such speculation. Today's political climate takes no prisoners. You're guilty based on speculation alone. Look what happens to male doctors who are alone with female patients. I'm sure some of the accusations are valid but I suspect many are no more than opportunities to make trouble or cash in. If you're a male, you're a potential predator.

This goes for other situations as well. I'm an older man and do some volunteer work in a K-8 school but I'm not going into a classroom without the teacher or another staff member present. I love to watch very young children having fun at play but I dare not stop and stare unless with my wife or another family member as a witness. I would not have felt that way many years ago but I do fully understand what this politician is saying. Our public media has become a cursed bunch that cannot be trusted. This saddens me greatly but I'm on his side completely.

His side, on caution, is biblical.

His side, on governance, is not.
Close.

FYI In our meetings the two sexes* can have a private conversation in a corner of the Hall (best practice) or in a side room with the door open, in plain view. Mandatory is at least three if the door's closed.
You might find this interesting. You may have seen photos in our mags illustrating a single couple on a date, or a boss flirting with a secretary or such. The models are always married couples in real life. Doesn't allow a place for the devil.
I always admired several things about Billy Graham. The version I heard, which reflects no discredit on him, is that he had a close call as a young pastor. With every good intention of course. Afterward he made his vow.
We also have had such experiences go bad. Sad for them; warning for the rest of us.

* What??? There are others???

Something similar is company "policy' at most, probably almost all corporations - regarding employees dating each other. I've heard at some large companies it's not forbidden _if_ the people in question are from different depts. - though even then it's frowned upon normally. And such is often a sub-arc in television series' - such as "NYPD Blue" where it seemed just about _everyone_ was hot for each other and had to keep their relationships "on the down-low" as they say... Sometimes this worked, most times everyone else knew but held their "mud" - or not : if inclined to sabotage someone's career. Melodramas just love this mat'l. Personally at my age "sex scenes" in shows do absolutely nothing for me - I usually "talk to the screen" and say something like "yeah, yeah, get on with the plot, dammit!". :^) Yes, I know I'm an outlier in this regard, but to me it's just a waste of time.

"Melodramas just love this mat'l".
No, melodrama watchers just love it. Happy

Corporate rules against relationships often have less to do with moral codes than criminal ones. Two together in the same department can embezzle or steal secrets.
Anyway, Foster is (rightly) concerned with preventing the first step, before 'dating'.

BTW I re-read the piece. The woman sounds very much like a man defending his piggishness. She sees good sense and morals as sexism. Blames the victim. Makes lame, irrelevant excuses, which he refuted. He made an excellent point about 'my pickup, my rules', which she rejects. 'His pickup, my rules'.

Her CV includes a Master's from Columbia's J-School, one of the best, so she learned better. They instituted an ethics and policy curriculum some time ago, and its teachings are available on a Columbia blog.

methodically for ages, so I disagree. She can say what she likes. It's not exactly "fair", but who ever says "it ain't fair" has yet to truly know the state of absolute reality - or so the philosophers tell me.

Addendum about lack of trust

I should have included folks with cell phone cameras. 5 seconds of awkward video (with or without sound) has taken a toll on many who have good reputations. Representing something in its full context is no longer required to differentiate reality from perception.
