"false/positive" type of view count because of the number of Moderators all across CNET who view all of the posts just to make sure the content is acceptable and not necessarily because the topic itself will be replied to by that Moderator. Many of our forums have multiple Moderators so the number of people viewing a post will increase just because a Moderator has viewed it with no response intended by them because they don't know the answer and will defer the reply to another Moderator or another member. I know, for myself, that I will see a topic that catches my eye thinking I can help with the problem, only to find out that it's out of my league and then back out and wait for a reply from someone else. If the reply gives the solution, it's cool to realize that I've now learned something new without ever having to admit I didn't know the answer in the first place...heheheh.
Another problem with your idea is that in order to read replies, the original topic post will always be the first one 'read' in order to open the view to include all replies, which means that topic post gets viewed over and over without having a true count on the number of views it's getting from interested parties. There would be no way to stop that 'false' view from being counted/added into the total.
TONI
If it were possible to see how many views a particular posting received. I know I would like to see how popular certain topics are. Currently the only indication is the number of responses, but I'm certain there are hundreds that view a post and do not reply.
Just a suggestion.
