Would you like to connect to the Internet?

Jun 25, 2007 8:35AM PDT

I recently did a fresh install of my operating system, Windows XP Pro with updates. Everything is working well save whenever I attempt to go check my e-mail with Outlook Express or open up my browser, I get a pop up window that says I'm not online and would I like to go online. I have always on DSL and have designated such via the Internet Options under Tools in Internet Explore.

Any clue how I can convince my computer I'm already online?

Thanks for your assistance - TK

In Internet Explorer...

Open IE, then click on "File" in the upper left, scroll to "Work Offline" and click on it to UNCHECK it. That is, if it's got a CHECK mark beside it.

Or...are you using a different browser? Firefox has a similar "Work Offline" option.

Hope this helps.

One of the problems with this situation...

One of the problems with this situation is predictable consistency.

Right now I can open Outlook Express, Internet Explore and or Firefox without a problem. Maybe an hour from now, two hours from now, if I attempt to open the application again, I'm offline and have to click go online. Yet other times, I close all these applications and go back to them in two hours and this time it may not give me the offline message.

I've even tested the following conditions, closed all active applications (antivirus programming still running) stepped away from the computer, returned two hours later and on some occasions I get the offline pop up box and other times no pop up and I'm right online.

Thanks for you input, much appreciated - TK

That's A Clue...

It appears like you're having router or modem issues.. If you haven't done it already, downloading and upgrading any firmware for your router or modem, or both.. (It would be nice to know which of these you have and their model numbers.)

Next, turn off the computer, then turn off the power button to the router/modem.. Wait for about 10 minutes,,(yes a full 10 minutes), then turn on the router/modem, wait a minute or two for everything to initialize, then turn on the computer. You might even try swapping in a known good modem/router.. Or if you have both a router and a modem.. remove the router and see if it's the culprit.

If the above steps don't help, then I recommend contacting your ISP.. If you're having a reoccurring line problems, it very easily could be the ISP.

Hope this helps.
