Resolved Question

Would this be a good setup

Sep 12, 2013 10:50AM PDT

I'm going to be needing a HDD to back up a computer at my American Legion post so I thought I'd get one for myself also. I was thinking about buying a HDD docking station like this-> http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-eSATA-Drive-Docking-Station/dp/B001IOPIRM/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1379031770&sr=8-6&keywords=hdd+docking+station and 2 HDD's like this->http://www.amazon.com/WD-Blue-Desktop-Hard-Drive/dp/B0088PUEPK/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1379032425&sr=1-1&keywords=wd+10ezex or is this a bad idea ? What would be the better way to do this ?

Usb2 does not lend itself to moving large amounts of data.
If your going to do such a thing with usb2 you'll see what I mean.

If your going to do that kind of activity you'll need usb3 or e-sata.

Odd.

I think the last time round we moved 2TB over USB 2.0.

Maybe our gear is up to it but I never found this to be a 2.0 limitation.

You could move that 2TB via usb 1.
You best not be in a hurry.
That won't be a problem for the Op since the legion has an unlimited beer supply.

Just a"Big Thanks" for turning me on to the Passport and y-cable. I recieved it today . I've been downloading music for the last few days and have 51GB downloaded so far into what used to be the Dell 530S.I dunno if we can still call it that after all the changes we made to it but , I plugged the Y-cable into the two front USB connectors and that into the Passport. 7 minutes later all 51GB were copied. I than plugged that into my Toshiba Qosmio and began playing music off of the Passport. No formatting or anything. Slicker Than Snake Sh**! Again"You Da Man Bob" .....Digger Cool

Is a favorite in my PC medicine kit. It really helps when I want to use USB powered drives.

I even can use such on laptops under battery power (but don't recommend) in a pinch.

Glad that simple works for you here. The SATA dock is a little finicky for some and opened the possibility of losing drives as it's a bare drive. One wrong move and the drive in the enclosure would survive when a bare drive would fail.

Thanks for the feedback.
