I run VMWare Fusion on both my MacPro and MacBook Pro. I love the program, it is simply phenomenal software. However, my understanding of its workings is that it allows a pass-through of the connections and peripherals that I have attached to my Mac and I'm not sure it would allow a unique connection or peripheral that was solely limited to the Mac.
I would suggest scanning through the manual for the software, you might find the answer there and it could possibly be your solution. The 2.0 beta version is supposedly going to make it much easier to handle printers via the virtual session. It is available as a free download to try and might be the way to confirm if it will solve your problem. Go to http://communities.vmware.com/community/beta/fusion
Alternatively, given the low cost of printers these days, it might just be best to pick up a new one that will work with your Mac OS. If you have other programs that you must have in the PC format, VMWare Fusion is definitely the way to go.
I am running Vista 64 on my session, but there are many options for operating systems that work with it including Linux and Ubuntu. While I enjoy the speed of Vista 64 I do recommend you check carefully to see if your PC based software will run and the peripherals you want to connect have 64 bit drivers. There are one or two programs I wanted to use that will only work with Vista 32.
Given that your interface for your printer is limited to USB 1.1, I think you are going to be much happier with a new printer. If you absolutely need laser and like the Konica Minolta series, all of their newer models support all of the interfaces including Mac OS/X.
Good luck.
Before I spend money on Virtual software - I would like to know if what I would like to accomplish will work. I have a 2.8 iMac Intel Core 2 Duo - running OS X 10.5.2. My color laser printer (used for many years with a PC - but still has a lot of good life in it) is a Konica Minolta MC2300DL. I have searched for drivers to have this printer work with the iMac to no avail. I am thinking of adding VMware and Windows XP to the iMac - to gain the use of the printer and a few Windows based programs that I might like having on the Mac. If I don't gain the use of the printer using these programs - I really don't see the use of paying for VMware and XP - it would be easier to buy a decent quality printer for the iMac.
If anyone has experienced virtual software and driver success such as this - would you share your experiences?
Thanks in advance
