Would like opinions on this program to speed up internet browsing

Jun 3, 2004 6:23PM PDT

XP HOME & IE 6
Browsing has become very slow. I've scanned for everything, etc. I am tempted to use this program, "Accelerate 4.0" from Major Geeks. It's supposed to speed up your internet connection somehow and sounds pretty great. Still, I'm cautious... Has anyone here used it or heard about it? Opinions? I am getting desperate to solve this problem. I have a cable modem which is usually fast. Since last week it's been acting worse than a bad dial-up.

Have you removed the parasites yet?

Read http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/

Are you sure that no worm or trojan which your Antivirus doesn't know about is there?

Hint: find and run Housecall.

Yes, I have run Housecall! Clean! Also: Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D (even got the newest 1.3 version yesterday and ran that as well), cwshredder, (got Spyblaster for future protection). I posted over in the XP Forum asking about the Temp Internet Files question as it possibly relates to this:

(Just telling you just so you know I'm also working on the angles suggested there.)

I'm getting pretty frantic! My neighbor also has cable, same company, and he says his connection and speed is the same as always, and he tried getting on the sites I've noted were slow, and said they were fast and prompt. So unfortunately I can't blame it on my cable provider.

And also,...

Also, ran TDS3 and The Cleaner for trojans. I'm going to run The Cleaner again.

Gregory:

Have you defragmented your drive recently? Have you cleaned your browser's cache? I'd get rid of all the cookies, too, even though some can be helpful.

Also, if you have a lot of programs that are in your Startup menu (or that start when Windows boots), it can slow your system (and browing) down.

Hope this helps.

Yup, did all that. Well, except there ARE some programs that other people probably don't run at startup that could be bogging things... I'll try to bite the bullet and get rid of some. Thanks!

IE 6
Mar 29, 2005 7:54AM PST

I too have had problems with IE 6, I have cable and run spybot, regcleanner, spywareblaster, and Ad-ware. Run defrag, scan disk, chkdisk on a regular basis.

I found while browsing IE 6, it became really slow, and took a while to load the pages, but everything else seemed to be ok.

I have been reading and searching through all the forums trying to find solutions etc..when I came across this thread. I saw HOUSECALL and thought I would give this a scan, thinking I had nothing on my computer as i'm always checking, and Lo and behold, there was 1 !! I was so surprised, it looked familiar to me, and it was uncleanable and I deleted it.

I was wondering, after deleting the trojan is it gone or could it be somewhere else on the computer? I have re scanned my computer and nothing come up, but i just wanted to be sure.

I havent checked yet whether or not the browsing has increased speed, wish me luck LOL ...

this is by far one of the best sites ever !!

thanks everyone keep up the great work !!
every now and then I'll search through the forums for good advice, and to see what everyone else thinks.

Re: Internet slow

1. If you do suspect other (background) programs simply see what happens if you temporarily don't run them. That sounds simple. The effect on the CPU usage can easily be seen in Task Manager.
2. If you suspect IE-specific things (like spyware or settings) see what using another browser like Firefox does.

Before installing a 15-day free trial of some over-hyped, over-priced, clone of what's already available for free, try SpeedGuide.net, CableNut.com, and the Navas Cable Modem/DSL Tuning Guide (all show up easily via Google search).

Unless you've manually adjusted it yourself, IE's default setting for cache ("Temporary Internet Files") is incredibly stupid. On a 30 GB harddisk with about 20 GB free, IE will default to using almost 20 GB as cache--it spends more time fragmenting the drive and searching for pages than it does downloading them. Go into Internet options, clear the cache and reduce its allowable maximum to somewhere between 30 and 200 MB (use the upper end if you view a lot of online videos).

In all my years that I dealt with dial up the only thing I found that helped was Cablenut which is a convenient way to tweak the registry settings without going into the registry

If you have cable and it has been fast until a week ago..
Apr 2, 2005 7:02AM PST

now it's slow, you have a problem with something other than settings. You don't need to add some more software, that probably won't help you. You probably have some adware or spyware or a virus. Try checking the start up items in msconfig then go to the services.msc and compare whats in there to what's at the Black Viper website. Make sure you scan with ad aware or spybot, and do a virus scan.
Did you put a program on your machine in the last week or 2? Maybe that's conflicting?
Try installing Firefox if it works good it might be what Robert Profit suggested in IE or IE might just got messed up.
