As to my setup, it's just a current antivirus, firewall, and since I don't use IE much I don't find it necessary to scan daily with EWIDO or such. It's fairly boring.

Recently I had a major problem with spyware on my computer -- bad enough that I eventually had to bring it in to a technician to remove the stuff. Besides eliminating the malware, (which also included some trojans and keyloggers) he offered some advice on what and what not to use. I'm curious to know your opinions on this.
Firewall:
What I had: McAfee plus a Linksys hardwall firewall
What he recommended: He thought that most firewalls
available for consumers are garbage; short of
spending thousands of dollars for a professional
security system, he suggested using the Windows
firewall and a hardware firewall, making sure that
plug and play is disabled.
Antivirus:
What I had: McAfee
What he recommended: He thought McAfee was fine, but
added Avast, this being a rare case in which
2 AVs don't conflict
Antispyware:
What I had: Webroot Spysweeper, Adaware, Spybot
What he recommended: He said Webroot and Spybot were
worthless. Instead use Windows Defender and
Adaware as a supplement.
Password Keeper:
What I had: Roboform
What he recommended: Don't use. Keep passwords off
computer.
Online activities:
What I did: A lot of online gaming, especially on
Pogo and Neopets
What he recommended: Avoid online gaming. The less
reputable ones install spyware; the respectable
sites leave ports open so that malware can get
in
I've been tentatively following his advice (clearly I was doing something wrong!) However, I question his recommendation of the Windows Firewall, since every other source says it's an inferior product. Also, I miss online gaming. What do you all think? Should I continue with this set-up?
